- Road to the back 5 acres!

Bill began digging a trail which will lead to the bottom 5 acres of our land and our stream. His new tractor was very helpful in leveling off the first part of the project in May 2013.

We decided a larger tractor was needed to complete the road,
so we waited for further help.

Thursday August 29, 2013:
Grady was able to complete the project for us with his Caterpillar!

I look busy cutting tree limbs back from the road!!
I lasted about 20 minutes in the heat.  Thanks to Ray Southern for helping!!

- TREES

On Wednesday August 28, 2013, Grady and his team worked to cut down the trees that would have been in the way of building the house.

- Building Permit, Electricity & Staking the House

As soon as our building permit & electrical hook-up arrived,
VC Design was ready to stake the outline of the house.

We protected the septic system with stakes & tape.

Tony & Robert, from VC Design, staked out the outline of the house.

- Ready to Build

VC Design and Build agreed to work with us & Jay in building our dream home. On August 6, 2013, we signed a contract with VC Design!

Tony and Vince Phelps (owner), from VC Design
Tony & Vince spent many months with us planning out the details of the contract. We are looking forward to working with them and their colleagues.

- Septic System and Wells

We began preparing our property for building by putting in wells and a septic system in the summer of 2009. The Delpino family were camping nearby and Aidan was very interested in the large machinery and huge hole dug for the septic system!

- Jay Hough, Architect

Our quest to find an architect began shortly after purchasing the property.

While on vacation, we were paying for our lunch at a local Bedford restaurant one day when we were discussing with the owner how and where to look for an architect in the area.  A couple standing near us said they recently had their house built by a very talented architect and gave us his name.

Jay Hough, graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, met with us and agreed to design a home to meet all our wants and needs.

We have traveled from Roanoke to Lynchburg with Jay looking at types of homes, sidings, colors, appliances, lighting fixtures, flooring, windows & tile.  His expertise has led us to a beautiful vision and set of plans for our home.

Jay and Bill walked the property to lay out a possible position for our home.

- Sold!

Bill and I were searching for a nice, quiet small town to build our retirement home. We found 8 acres in Bedford county and began our journey towards a peaceful existence in the mountains.

We spent the next several years re-modeling our Willoughby beach home of 31 years and finally sold it in the fall of 2012 - Bedford, here we come!!
